A rotary cutter, also known as a bush hog or brush hog, can cut through even the densest of vegetation with ease. It’s one of the best ways to help get the overgrown parts of your farm or property under control. Of course, a rotary cutter won’t do much good if it’s not properly leveled. That’s why the experts at Eastman Equipment Company have created this usage guide.

Getting Started

Before you get started on attaching and leveling your rotary cutter, it’s important that you find a good starting position. A concrete slab or asphalt patch will help provide flat, level ground so that it is easier to tell if the blades are level or not.

The Importance of Leveling Your Rotary Cutter

Leveling your rotary cutter may be a complicated process, but it’s the only way to ensure a clean and even cut. Don’t forget to set the front blades slightly lower than the rear blades by ½ of an inch to 1 inch. This will allow the front blades to do the cutting without dragging the rear blades through the grass.

Attaching the Rotary Cutter to Your Tractor

Start by slowly backing your tractor up to the rotary cutter. Align the three-point hitch arms on the rear of your tractor to the three-point rod connectors on the rotary cutter and lock the lever to “position control.” Next, put the tractor in first gear, shut off the engine, and chock the rear wheels. Side the left three-point hitch arm into place and insert the retaining pin. Repeat this process for the right and center hitch arms before hooking up the end of the rotary cutter drive shaft to the tractor’s PTO. Pull the lock collar back as you push the splines together and move the drive shaft onto the PTO. Next, adjust the angle of the cutter’s blades using the three-point hitch’s center turnbuckle. Use the right turnbuckle to adjust things so that the skids are two inches off the ground on both sides. Finally, tighten up the anti-sway bars. Now you’re ready to start cutting!
