Getting Your Tractor Out of Mud
When you’re working on your farm in all types of weather, you’re inevitably going to end up driving through muddy fields after a hard rain. And while your tractor is designed to plow through tough terrain, you may sometimes still end up getting stuck in the muck. This can really sideline your day, since you can’t do much work without your tractor, so you have to have some strategies on-hand to help yourself get unstuck.
Raise Your Implements
Before you do anything else, lift up your implements out of the mud and keep them raised. Otherwise, these tools will simply get in your way while you’re trying to get unstuck.
Shift Forward or Backwards
The first thing you can try is to gently ease your tractor either forwards or backwards, depending on how far into the mud you are. Go at a constant rate and stop immediately if your tractor stalls or the wheels just spin.
Try Boards & a Shovel
You can go to your shed and grab some flat planks of wood to place under the rear wheels of your tractor. Grab a shovel and scoop out mud around the tires before you get back in the cab to attempt reversing out of the muck. Again, stop if this isn’t working for you.
Call a Neighbor
Finally, if you’ve exhausted your options, it may be time to phone a friend with a tractor who can hitch it up to your tractor and drag you out using towing chains. Just make sure that you don’t get their tractor stuck, too!
